Development and application of solid-state NMR spectroscopy to inorganic and hybrid materials

Currently active projects

Finding solutions to many societal challenges (secure and clean energy, climate action, green transport, industrial innovation…) requires research on advanced materials (micro- and meso-porous hydrid materials, nanoparticles, thin-films…) incorporating novel or improved functionalities (heterogeneous catalysis, production and storage of energy, adsorption, optical properties…). Many functionalities of these materials are governed by the structure and the dynamics at atomic level. Hence, having a precise understanding of these structural and dynamic features is a powerful way to control and improve the materials properties.      

Solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for characterizing the structure and the dynamics of materials at atomic level. NMR is especially qualified in the case of chemical systems not amenable to conventional diffraction techniques. This includes microcrystalline and non-crystalline solids (e.g. glasses), composite and heterogeneous materials (e.g. heterogeneous catalysts), and mesophases. For all these systems, NMR techniques allow probing the local environment of atoms (within a range of 5 to 10 Å), the presence of covalent bonds (through the J-couplings) as well as the orientations and the dynamics of molecules.

Our research focuses on the development of new instruments and techniques in solid-state NMR and their application for the characterization of materials. In particular, our instrumental and methodological developments aim at improving the resolution and the sensitivity of solid-state NMR in order to enlarge the scope of this spectroscopy and to tackle important questions in chemistry and material sciences.

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization

Olivier Lafon initiated research activity in Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP)-enhanced NMR of materials in 2009, at a period of time in which the potential of high-field DNP-NMR for the study of materials has not yet been demonstrated. We notably showed that DNP direct excitation enhances the signal of nuclei near unpaired electrons, whereas DNP cross-polarization (CP) from 1H is able to enhance NMR signals of nuclei located at 100’s nm from the radicals. We also systematically analyzed the different contributions (microwave irradiation, paramagnetic effects, presence of frozen solvent, temperature) to sensitivity enhancement of DNP 13C and 29Si CP-MAS experiments of functionalized mesoporous silica. In particular, we employed the enhanced sensitivity of DNP-NMR to probe the surface of mesoporous silica, mesoporous alumina and nanoparticles. In 2013, Olivier Lafon was awarded the Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry Award for Young Scientists by the scientific committee of Euromar for his achievements in the characterization of nanostructured materials by DNP-NMR.

Solid-state NMR at high-magnetic fields

Olivier Lafon is the chief science officer of Lille high-field NMR facility which is part of the IR-RMN-THC network (FR 3050, www.ir-rmn.fr/) and provides both access to 800 and 900 MHz NMR spectrometers and the associated expertise to French and international users. These high-field NMR spectrometers allow the study of both liquids and solids. The University of Lille and UCCS have also been selected by the CNRS in 2014 to host the first 1.2 GHz NMR spectrometer to be installed in France. This instrument will be equipped for both liquid- and solid-state NMR.


High-magnetic fields enhance the sensitivity and the resolution of solid-state NMR. Such enhancements are especially large for quadrupolar nuclei (27Al, 11B, 17O, 25Mg…), which account for over 75% of all NMR-accessible nuclei and are present in most inorganic materials.

We made significant contribution to the observation of internuclear proximities using solid-state NMR. We notably introduced robust and efficient methods to probe proximities between spin-1/2 (1H, 19F, 31P, 29Si…) and quadrupolar nuclei. For instance, the NMR observation of 27Al-31P proximities at high field yielded access to the highly complex powdered aluminophosphates.

Spin dynamics and novel NMR methods

Much of our work entails the development of novel NMR techniques via a detailed understanding of the dynamics of nuclear spins during the NMR pulse sequences. We notably designed radiofrequency irradiation schemes to obtain high-resolution 1H spectra in solids. We also demonstrated that for half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei, such as 27Al, the manipulation of satellite transitions accelerates the coherence transfer and hence improves the sensitivity of HMQC experiments based on coherence transfers via J-couplings. This technique has been used to probe 31P-O-27Al connectivities in aluminophosphate materials and 27Al-17O covalent bonds in alumina. We explained how spinning sideband-selective pulses are useful for the indirect excitation of 14N nuclei.

Fast acquisition of multidimensional NMR experiments

Unique information about the atom-level structure and dynamics of solids can be obtained by the use of multidimensional NMR experiments. Nevertheless, the acquisition of these experiments often requires long acquisition times. Non-Uniform Sampling (NUS) has been proposed to circumvent this issue. We showed that covariance transform can be used for the reconstruction of homonuclear NUS 2D NMR spectra, leading to an enhancement of the spectral resolution and a reduction in the acquisition time. NUS can also enhance the sensitivity by denser sampling for evolution times corresponding to higher signal-to-noise ratios.  We introduced criteria to optimize this sensitivity enhancement using NUS and compressed sensing reconstruction methods. In 2015, we wrote a review about the alternative sampling methods to accelerate the acquisition of multidimensional solid-state NMR experiments.

Structural investigation of heterogeneous catalysts

Solid-state (DNP)-NMR is a powerful technique to probe the structure of active catalytic sites and their interactions with reactants. We have introduced sophisticated NMR methods to characterize the heterogeneous catalysts. In particular, using 13C-27Al double-resonance experiments, we reported the first NMR observation of C-Al covalent bond in solids and investigated the structure of organometallic aluminium derivatives used as co-catalysts in olefin polymerization. 13C-27Al NMR experiments were also applied to study the host-guest interactions in dealuminated zeolites. The sensitivity gain provided by DNP also opens new avenues for the characterization of surfaces. In particular, we used DNP-NMR to study the surface of mesoporous alumina and -alumina and demonstrated that pentacoordinated Al sites are only located in the first surface layer of -alumina. We also used DNP-NMR to study the mechanism of nitridation of silica and the surface structure of oxynitrides produced from fibrous silica nanoparticles (KCC-1). This study allows understanding the influence of the nitridation temperature on the activity of these solid-base nanocatalysts.

Characterization of nanostructured materials

Besides heterogeneous catalysts, we also use solid-state NMR to study other classes of nanostructured materials, such as nanoparticles, polyoxometalates or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In particular, we demonstrated how advanced 13C-27Al DNP-NMR experiments can be used to study the framework structure of aluminium-based MOFs. We also introduced innovative methods for the quantitative analysis of the proximities between OH ligands and vanadium sites in a polyoxovanadate cluster. We also demonstrated the potential of solid-state NMR for the characterization of functionalized nanodiamonds.
